Members' Page

The Members Page is where we can record some of the less ordinary things we do as members. We hope to do some stories about members and their quilting journeys and their successes. Its a place where, hopefully, you can find out if someone wants to start a new stitching group, or even if you want to ask a question that you think members might have the answer to.

Virginia McKenzie Article on BBC

Our very own Virginia Bilocca-McKenzie is the daughter of the legendary Hull campaigner Lillian Bilocca and when she travelled back to the UK this year she viewed the mural to her mother who led the Headscarf Revolutionaries.  The full article can be read here

Bobby Duncan Life Member Recognised

CITATION:

Our nominee  for life membership was  a foundation member of Kapiti Coast Quilters. She was recorded in attendance at the  inaugural meeting on 9th March 1997 and she was present at the first AGM held 2 July 1998.

She served as Convenor of the Guild in the 2003 to 2005 and  remained on the committee in for 2005/2006/

as immediate past convenor.

Her contribution to the quilting community goes outside of Kapiti Coast.  She has been and  is involved in outside events and organisations where  she has effectively promoted Kapiti Coast Quilters as a strong, creative, caring guild. Of particular note is her involvement with Aotearoa Quilters (AQ) and her role as North Island Co-ordinator for Cosy Kiwi Kids, a charity that provides quilts for distribution to children in need.

During the 8 years  with Cosy Kiwi kids over 1000 quilts were distributed to help keep children warm. This service to the wider community shines a light on her giving to, and caring about, those in need of help.

She was Convener of the 2009 highly successful Harbour City Symposium held in Wellington. Our guild is still benefitting from the financial success of this event which was shared with the local guilds and our guild. She and her late husband, supported subsequent Symposiums through advisory roles, in particular providing website expertise to the 2022 Symposium.

Across the 27 years of Kapiti Coast Quilters she has contributed continuously to the club by being an active

member, helping write and maintaining the Constitution and active her  involvement in Community Quilts . Community Quilts continues to benefit from her involvement and contribution.

She is a member of the recently formed sub-committee and over the past 10 or more years has donated metres of fabric and quilt panels, hours of time and an inordinate amount of storage space in her home for batting, fabric and completed quilts. Without this donation of time, space and organizational capability Community Quilts would not achieve the success they do.

The long arm quilters in the guild have benefitted from her as a willing mentor to them over many years.

Therefore to celebrate her  vast  contribution to Kapiti Coast Quilters and to the Quilting Community at large it is our honour to award Bobby Duncan Life Membership of Kapiti Coast Quilters.

Capital Quilters Exhibition May 2024

Vickie McGoverin

After a four year hiatus, Capital Quilters once again put on a spectacular show at the Events Centre in Lower Hutt. I was lucky enough to attend with a group of friends, but some of our group were unable to go and I promised to take lots of photos so they wouldn't miss out completely - little did I know what a job that would turn out to be! There was something for everyone, from traditional to contemporary, large to small, machine and hand work, familiar designers and complete originals. Below is just a small selection of some of the quilts (please note these photos weren't originally intended for "public consumption" so are not taken straight on in most cases. All makers are credited.)

Club Retreat 2023

Relaxing at the end of a hard-working day.

We all had a great time on the club retreat at Threaded Needle in July. Here are the comments of some of the participants:

"Thank you all for a fun 2.5 days of sewing and friendship.  I had a very happy and productive time!  I thought it was a warm and comfortable place and food was good, the lighting good,  good ironing space etc...."

"What a pleasure it was to be at the retreat.

"Yes it was  a great weekend good company  fabulous  stitching, great food what more could we want"

"Had a wonderful time. So tired when I got home, just sat with a drink and crackers and stitched down my binding. Roll on the next one."

"Many thanks Maree for organising a most enjoyable retreat. I would like a comment passed on to Leigh about the great job Tracey did as our hostess. She was bright, bubbly, enthusiastic and interacted with us warmly. She was definitely an integral part of a successful weekend."

The only criticism was that the workspace for the number of participants was a little too small and we decided that any future retreat at this venue should would involve a couple fewer participants but in the end no-one let that get in the way of a great weekend.

"And thanks to all of you for your company; its so companionable sharing our quilting projects, knowledge, problems and successes. Look forward to seeing you all again soon."

(AND there is Maree at left - photo-bombing again!!)
