Situated on the beautiful Kapiti Coast of New Zealand we are a diverse group of quilters and fibre artists with the love of quilting as the thread which brings us together. From the outset we have been a dynamic group participating in and enjoying a broad range of activities. These include a variety of classes, addresses from speakers (both local and international), sewing days and exhibitions.
Meetings are held twice a month at Waikanae Bridge Rooms, 27 Elizabeth Street, Waikanae. This means we have both a day and an evening meeting to suit the needs of all members. Interesting speakers, Show and Tell and helpful hints mean we are always inspired at our meetings over the year. Day meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at 10am. Evening meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm. Next meeting dates are advertised in the relevant section of the website.
Membership of the guild from 2022 will cost $40 per annum with a $5 discount if paid by May 31st each year and can be paid in cash to the Treasurer (Donna Jordan) at meetings, but preferably through internet banking. Our Account No is: 01-1167-0013764-00. New members should be sure to put their name in the reference and fill in a membership form (download here KCQ Membership Form.pdf) to give to a committee member at your next meeting or email to kcqmembership@gmail.com. Please note - there is an initial discount for members who join between August and October, $26 and between November and March, $13.
Visitors are welcome to our monthly meetings- people can attend two free sessions but are then expected to become members if they wish to participate further.
OTHER ACTIVITIES:
Classes, where we can learn new techniques or 'relearn' them as the case may be, are held throughout the year . To find out more about classes click here
Community Quilts Group - At Community Quilts we make quilts to provide comfort and warmth to people in need. Some recipients of our quilts have been Kapiti Women's Refuge, Kapiti Youth Support, Cosy Kiwi Kids, flood victims in Hawkes Bay and local fire victims.
Community Quilts has a large supply of fabric and partly completed projects that have been donated You can either work on a quilt at home by yourself or join with friends and share the experience. Every two months there is Community Quilts Day where we can all work on our quilts together at the Bridge Club. We meet on a Saturday from 10am till about 2.30pm but you can attend for all or part of this time . You can find out more about Community Quilts by clicking here.
So while several small groups of quilters continue to meet in the community, our Guild has achieved our aim of enabling quilters on the Kapiti Coast to meet and share their passion for the craft, on a larger scale.
The AGM is held in June and a committee of up to 10 are elected to run the organisation. This year we have 1 vacancy and anyone interested in joining the committee should speak to Louise Blackwood our Convenor.

I moved to the Kapiti Coast 4 1/2 yrs ago but know the area well as we had a holiday home in Waikanae for 30 yrs. I only joined the Guild last year.

I’ve lived on the beautiful Kapiti Coast since 2001 and have been quilting since 2003 when I ambitiously made a denim quilt of my own design. That first effort left me with RSI and a fun quilt for a king size bed – I had no idea what I was doing and was not prepared to call myself a quilter! Since then I’ve taken a number of skill building classes, made a gazillion mistakes, exhibited and won a couple of prizes in our exhibitions and attended symposium in 2023 for the first time. I am constantly inspired by the quilts and other beautiful things that our members make. I’ve been a member of the club since 2018. I live with my husband and dog in Otaki and have two awesome grown up kids. By day I’m a Business Change Manager working on transformation projects and in the little spare time I have I make handbags, quilts, wall hanging and anything else that comes to mind.
I'm married to Ross and have 3 grown up sons and 9 grandchildren. I have been quilting for about 32 years now. A friend introduced me to quilting and I love doing it. I go away to retreats with a group of friends 3 times a year and they are always fun. Over the last few years I've been making bags and have loved doing these. I'm running a class in Oct for some bags so that will be a new challenge for me. I'm looking forward to being on the committee hopefully bring some interesting clases and speakers to the club.

Hello, my name is Virginia McKenzie.
I emigrated to New Zealand from Hull, England, 52 years ago. The first 3 months was a shock to the system living in REEFTON, then it was a huge relief moving to Richmond.
I have lived on the Kapiti Coast since the mid 80's.
I quickly made friends by joining a netball team, subsequently becoming an umpire, which I enjoyed and loved for many years.
I am a lover of arts, crafts, patchwork, calligraphy, photography, beach walks and catching up with good friends and family.
Since retiring from Spotlight 13 months ago I am now also enjoying Zumba, aquafit, ukulele, singing, darts, card making, gardening and have joined a Probus Club and a Gardening Group.
I have been a member and a committee member on and off for years of the Kapiti Coast Quilters.

I moved up to Kapiti from Wellington in 2022 just after I retired, it was quite a busy few months. I have lived in Wellington all my life up to then apart from 3 years living in London. Love living in Paraparaumu Beach. Someone said ‘Why did you buy so close to the airport?’ I had to remind her I had moved from Miramar!
After retiring, it was great to have the time to get back into sewing, knitting and other crafts I enjoyed in the past. I come from a family of sewers but not very many quilters and joined Kapiti Coast Quilters in 2023. It is a pleasure to be learning so much from so many creative and talented quilters.
I worked in the financial services sector for 40 years, all in corporate superannuation and KiwiSaver, the last 11 years with Anglican Financial Care. Quilting is a great change from the anti-money laundering, privacy act, documentation and the other compliance activities that was part of a challenging and enjoyable career.
I am a member of Zonta International and Inner Wheel and these organisations allow me to give back to our community. I also make items for the NEST Collective.
I moved to the Kapiti Coast in 2022 for work. Previously I lived in Wanganui and was a member of Cotton On Quilters. The first quilt I made was when our son was born over 30 years ago. It was a cot quilt with Scottie dogs and Elliot tartan - it never got finished. I took a beginners class 20 years ago and became hooked. I like to try new techniques and love free motion quilting. I recently bought a long arm and am loving learning to use it. I have more quilts to make than time.
I've lived in Kapiti since 2003. I've been quilting since 2006 and have been a member of the Guild since 2018. I was aware of the existence of the Guild from adverts in 'Fibre Flair' but didn't think my quilting was good enough! From the first meeting I knew I had been wrong about needing to be good enough. I love learning about fabric, quilting and stitches and making items for my home (such as Roman blinds, cushions etc). Over time my quilting interests have changed. I like free motion quilting and art quilts. Currently I'm combining my love of embroidery with quilting.
