Exhibition 2023
Viewer's Choice Winners
Main Exhibition
The Viewer's Choice in the main competition was won by Elly Holmes. Her quilt Is called Memories in a bookcase. She said the bookcase is a medium showing memories of our family life. The quilt is Pieced, appliqued, and she used fabric printing and quilting. The pattern is her own and she quilted the quilt herself.
This year was a special presentation because Elly received the inaugural presentation of a cup donated by our former Convenor Diane Keen's family in her memory. The Committee have decided to present the cup annually for activities such as challenges and special prizes at our biennial show, such as, but not necessarily always, Viewer's Choice.

Exhibition Newsletter
Its hard to believe we’re just on 7 weeks away from our exhibition!!! The last couple of months have raced by!!! You may have already seen quite a few posters being shared by our merchants and other supporters. Over the next few weeks you will see more signs going up all around the Kapiti Coast and even more posters about – your advertising team have been working hard and have done a fantastic job.
Quilt Drops
These kick in over the next few weeks too.
Entries Due by 26th August
The Entry Form for Exhibition Quilts can be downloaded here
Quilt Entry Locations and Times:
Kapiti Coast Quilters Day Meeting Tuesday 15 August 2023 Bridge Club Rooms
Judy Boyle’s Friday 18 August 4pm – 7pm 10 Wakefield Grove,
Saturday 19 August 10am – 1pm Waikanae
Sunday 20 August 2023 10 am – 3pm
The Committee would prefer all quilts to be in during the weekend of 18th- 20th August but if you can't make that then you can drop it off at:
Suzanne Sage’s Saturday 26 August 2023 10am – 3pm 450 Te Moana Road, Waikanae
Or, please don’t hesitate to contact Suzanne Sage ph 027 281 7200 to make a collection arrangement.
Remember:
Velcro – hook side out attached to the top of your quilt if it is smaller than 1.75m. Larger than 1.75m then you’ll need a hanging sleeve and a rod or rail to hang it from.
A photo which is a good likeness of your quilt, with the quilt measurements written on the front of the photo (Why the photo??? We use the photo during the curation process to work out what we can place where, and what will fit on each row. If your photo doesn’t look like your quilt – it makes our job a heap harder.)
A completed entry form
Plastic bag/tubing will be available at all of the quilt drop locations if you need more.
Roster
We still have a number of gaps in the roster. These cover jobs like, taking entry fees, selling raffle tickets and assisting to show the quilts at the exhibition (white glove ladies). We’ve tried to break these down to reasonable time slots to spread the load and not make it too onerous – but now we need help to fill the time slots.
Please – if you can give us a couple of hours, we would be appreciative. Maybe spread a rotation doing white glove if you are able (which I always love as it means you get to see the exhibition close up) and a rotation selling tickets to give the feet a break? Just a couple of hours each will make it an easy job for us all.
Roster will be at the next day meeting – or you can email Marg Hutchison at margarethutchison110@gmail.com
Raffle
We still need a few more items for our Gardening and Gourmet raffles. If you have anything you can donate, contact Donna Jordan on Donnajordan242@gmail.com or phone 027 424 9060.
There are many little tasks that we are working our way through at the moment… so if we missed something or if you have any questions, please – don’t hesitate to get in touch with Jane or myself. Don’t be shy!!!
The count down is really on now!!! Woohoo – it’s going to be great show!!!

Our Raffle Quilt
The raffle quilt for the exhibition is now completed. Materials were donated by Fox's Cottage and Aimee's Homestead Quilts. Members of the Exhibition Committee are currently taking the quilt to the Guilds in the Region to raise awareness about our exhibition and boost ticket sales.
Members are being asked for help by taking some books of raffle tickets to sell to their friends and family. They will be available at our upcoming meetings. The tickets are $2 each and come in books of 5.

Exhibition Newsletter - May 2023
News Flash!!!
More details will follow but we thought we should let you all know, Kapiti Coast Quilters have been approached by Aotearoa Quilters and we’re delighted to share that they will have a presence at our exhibition in September. In addition to showing the Red Exhibition at our Exhibition, they are going to be unveiling their “Light it Up” Challenge. This is made up from 20 selected quilts, externally judged which will go on to tour the country We will be the first in the country to show them!!
They are also going to be holding their AGM on the Saturday night at Southward Car Museum after our exhibition closes. This is very exciting news as it will bring even more visitors into the region and into our exhibition!!!
If you belong to Aotearoa Quilters, you will see this information coming out shortly to members. Another reason now to get cracking and get those entries finished!!!
Suzanne Sage and Jane McNamara Co-Convenors, On Behalf of the Exhibition Committee 2023.
We Need Your Quilts
Will there be enough quilts to make a show? So how many do we need?? Over 100+ quilts to make a good show. And this is where we need your help… please – don’t feel shy about showing your quilt and don’t think that - “oh well - there are plenty of others who will have more than one quilt…” we need quilts!!! Without them – we don’t have a show.
Entry Form for Exhibition
The Entry Form and Conditions of Entry are now available. You can download the form by clicking here. Collection of entries starts on the first Thursday night meeting on August 3rd through to the 26th of August. Collection points are listed on the entry form.
Hanging Your Quilts in the Exhibition
Large Quilts
If your quilt is larger than 1.75m wide it will need a hanging sleeve Attached to the back and a pole to hang the quilts from. Quilts wider than 1.75m are generally too heavy for Velcro to hold and they are displayed on the outer walls of the exhibition hall. Make sure you have your name on the pole too.
Quilts less than 1.75m wide
A quilt smaller than 1.75m will need to have Velcro (the hook side) attached to the top edge of the quilt. Ideally, it works better if it is sewn to the top as that will hold better, ensure your quilt hangs flat and reduce the risk of ripping. There are various methods of doing this (there is no right or wrong way).
Tips from Suzanne:
I sew the velcro to a long scrap of fabric that is long enough for the width of the quilt – I use a zipper foot to sew the Velcro on.
I turn the edges under leaving a good centimetre either side of the Velcro and press
I hand stitch the Velcro strip to the top edge of the quilt – just below the binding.
My Velcro strips get removed at the end and reused for the next show.
For our show, you do not need to have the fluffy side attached to the velcro, just the hook side is fine. Having the fluffy strip included just runs the risk of it getting lost.
Fibre Art Category
In addition to quilts – we will have a Fibre Art category… a Fibre Art item being:
A three dimensional object that you have crafted from fabric and other materials or components
Remember....
"Should I put something in the Exhibition?? I don’t think my quilts are good enough…." If you are wondering…. YES!!! Please do put your quilts into the show!!! If you are concerned about showing your quilt – maybe you think it’s not good enough…, maybe you’re shy…, maybe you don’t want it to be judged…. Don’t let that stop you!! You are good enough!!! Your quilt could be the inspiration for another quilter… you may be the one that tempts someone else into the world of quilting. Your quilt might just be the one that makes someone else think – “I could do that!” “I think I might want to join this group!” And even if you think it’s not good enough…. to someone else – it will be awesome!
AND – you don’t have to have your quilt judged… you can show it as an inspiration quilt. Anyone can be a patchwork quilter!!!
PLUS… if we don’t have quilts… we don’t have a show! Plain and simple really… we need as many quilts of all different styles, colours, designs and complexity!!! Be brave!!! (although we can remove your name if you’re really, really shy)
You still have have heaps of time… quilt collation will won’t be until late August.
For those of you who do want to enter your quilts to be judged and are interested in finding out what Judges will be looking for click here
Raffles… Raffles… Raffles…
Our raffle quilt is finished! You will get an opportunity to see it in the next month or so. We’re kicking off the printing of raffle tickets and they will be available mid/late July. This quilt has its own schedule from July through to the Exhibition. We’re taking the quilt to visit other Guilds (along with selling raffle tickets) and some of our merchants will also have it on display. Our raffle quilt has become its own person with its own very busy social life outside of Kapiti Coast Quilters.
We are now turning our attention to other raffles – we will be having:
A Gourmet Food Raffle,
A Gardening Raffle, and, of course,
A Quilting Raffle
If you have items that you think would be good to include into any of the above raffles then we’d be delighted to incorporate them. So, if you’re de-stashing or having a cleanout and have quality items that you think would be suitable – Donna Jordan (email: donnajordan242@gmail.com) is your lady!!!
Magazine Table
Do you have old quilt magazines that you are finished with and they are still in good order?
We will have a magazine table again at the Exhibition. This is something that as a Guild we’ve had good feedback on in the past and it’s great to be sharing our passion with like minded quilters. So, if you have good quality quilt magazines that you’re finished with – we will have a collection box available or pass them on to Jane McNamara (email: janemcnamara@xtra.co.nz)
Don’t Touch Signs
Earlier this year we asked members to make some new "Don't Touch" signs to hang with the quilts in the exhibition. We've had our first one in and we believe there are a few others under construction – which we are really grateful for. We need about a dozen new signs. Can ytou take completed, quilted signs to Jane McNamara (email: jane.mcnamara@xtra.co.nz) as soon as possible – that would be appreciated. Click here to get some ideas
Group Displays
By now you will have heard that we have secured the Aotearoa Quilters' Red Challenge Exhibition – this is pretty exciting as we will be one of the first few Guilds to show this exhibition and it will be of interest to many quilters.
We’ve also confirmed that we will also be displaying the work of our Community Quilters and of the Colour Challenge group from within our membership. We will also have a display from Loved 4 Life, a group in which many of our members are involved.
We are putting the offer out to any group, made up predominantly from Kapiti Coast Quilter Members, who would like to have a display at the exhibition. If you are a part of such a group, and would like to do a display (note – this is not to include items for sale) then please let Jane (email: jane.mcnamara@xtra.co.nz)or Suzanne (email: ssage@xtra.co.nz)know.

Judges
Lisa Call and Marge Hurst have both accepted our request to judge. This time we are adding in a Judges Walk, where our Judges will take a public tour through the exhibition, discussing what they were looking for in the judging process.
We will be circulating a list for you to register your interest in being a part of the judges walk. If there are many that are interested (too many to make a reasonable group) we will be limiting space to those who have entered a quilt in to be judged. In addition, we are planning to record the walk so that the information is available to the whole guild.
